MAIB has an important role in contributing to the reduction of the incidence and impact of road trauma in Tasmania and provides funding for a range of road safety activities.
The Road Safety Task Force
In 1996/97, the MAIB commenced funding the Road Safety Task Force (RSTF), a joint initiative administered by the Department of Police and Emergency Management and the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER). Since the inception of the RSTF, the MAIB has contributed in excess of $20 million towards road safety education and enforcement.
The MAIB has agreed to continue funding the RSTF for three years from January 2009, with the amount increased to $3.2 million per annum (indexed).
